Positive thinking despite witnessing bombings and explosions

It is Management Monday!

Why is it so important to manage your positive thinking?

Staying positive about a life that sometimes seems to offer you so little control at the wheel can be difficult. When you suffer a painful loss or damage to your sense of self, recovering emotions may seem next to impossible.  Of course, covering up emotion is never the right answer. Dealing with pain or frustration is about recognizing how to transform those feelings to positive ends. Every unfortunate situation is an opportunity to show leadership and be inspirational to others by embracing positive attitude and thinking. In the words of Zig Ziglar “You cannot tailor-make the situations in life but you can tailor-make the attitudes to fit those situations.”

You will find that this act of transforming difficult times into opportunities for positive thinking is both learnable and infectious. Look to those in your life or in the news who set this example and follow in their footsteps. Joe Berti, for example, recently witnessed both the Boston Marathon Bombing and the Texas explosion. He had just finished the marathon in Boston when the bombs struck. Then after settling in at home, for a moment he wondered if he was witnessing a Texas bombing when he felt the ground shake and saw large, grey billows of smoke rising in the air. He later learned the explosion was tied to an accident at a fertilizer plant. Joe has shared that everyone has been asking him if he feels unlucky. In this recent ABC News article, Joe expressed “not only do I not feel unlucky, but I feel blessed that my wife could be 10 yards from the explosion and not have a scratch.”

Whatever the difficulty or challenge might be, it is sometimes appropriate to feel sad, scared, angry or frustrated. You wouldn’t be human if you didn’t experience those emotions. However, it is helpful to train the mind and soul to look for the small sliver of positive hope and cling to it. Finding that positive aspect then clinging to it will not only help you heal, it will help you grow and it will inspire others. Of course turning to professionals is always an effective option too.
