According to USA.gov, getting a better job is among the top ten most common New Year resolutions. However, it’s noticeable that no other job related resolutions occupy the list. Take a trip and recycle make the cut, but not more job goals. This is surprising because in 2012, a survey by Right Management found that only 19% of American workers are happy with their jobs (Forbes). Wouldn’t it seem logical that improving work life goals would make the most popular resolutions list? If you’re not part of the 19% that are satisfied with their job, work-related New Year resolutions below may be appealing. Below are some resolutions to consider.
New Year Job Resolutions
- Get to the office on time so the day doesn’t begin rushed
- Start a well-done list of accomplishments you can refer to during challenges
- Try to learn something new everyday
- Eat healthier to improve job performance
- Kindle relationships that can lead to opportunities
- Delegate more often, as needed
- Say something nice to someone everyday to improve office morale and work culture
- Look for opportunities to sharpen skills
- Set quarterly outcome goals
- Learn something new about your company everyday
- Listen more closely to co-workers to improve office communication efforts
- Practice speaking more clearly on topics you find difficult to discuss
- Improve sleeping habits to improve job success
- Write down new processes as your learn them to save re-learning them later
- Learn to be more in touch with your emotions and those of others to improve relationships
These ideas may not be for everyone. But the main point is to take action for your own career future. If you say you don’t like your job, then spend time considering how you can make it more enjoyable or take the step to find a position that fits your values. It’s a new year and the cards are in your hands. Play them wisely.
