What is balanced leadership?
Balanced leadership refers to the process of employing a variety of teaching methods and skills to leadership. One of these methods is accountability with compassion, which means getting tough projects completed and assigning responsibilities in a humanized and considerate manner. An unfair, unbalanced leader practices ineffective indifference, lacking interest and concern for others, and unconcerned executions, meaning putting results before people’s well-being.
Being a more authentic and effective leader involves several concepts that may work better for others depending on the situation(s) at hand, the work environment, and how receptive others are to employing and receiving certain techniques. Some ways in which leaders have been recognized for being more authentic, expressive, and effective include:
- Rethinking their leadership image: not trying to fit into the traditional one-size-fits-all corporate standard leader, but someone who can think outside the box and is willing to try innovative techniques to help their team
- Increasing their self-awareness: This means being mindful of the things they say and do and how it will affect their employees, as well as paying attention to their employee’s receptiveness, boundaries, triggers, communication styles, and more that may affect certain group projects or individualized goals
- Assessing your values, likes, and dislikes: Keep in mind the techniques you practice that you may not feel as comfortable implementing or the ones that you feel may not align as closely with your values and those of the company’s. Also take note of your employee’s willingness to participate in certain leadership discussions and methods.
- Take action, but get support: Show that you are an effective leader who can readily make decisions without much regret behind them. Not only should you be able to make decisions you are proud of, but decisions that those you work with can support and promote.
In coaching hundreds of executives over the years, we have always started at the vertex; the values of the individual and expanded to other matrices. We have found that a balanced leader needs to be a balanced individual and a balanced individual is an authentic individual. Authenticity takes audacity, and determination. We assess for both before we take on a client.
